Welcome to the Pandora Engineering Blog
Before I joined Pandora in 2015 I was well aware of the quality of both the product and the people here. After I joined that quality became even more apparent. Walking through the office, you immediately sense that it’s a close-knit group, and that everyone absolutely loves to be a part of this team. The traits that define our product also define our people: humble, thoughtful, and obsessed with music.
What I was not aware of was the breadth and depth of the tech that is being built here. Below the surface of our radio product, Pandora is doing some of the most innovative engineering work that I’ve ever been involved with. We are building everything from new content delivery algorithms fueled by data science, to custom-built Redis and Postgres clustering solutions serving hundreds of terabytes of data, to one of the most effective ad-based monetization platforms in the world. Plus, we have a presence on over 1,000 different devices; not many companies can claim that.
In addition to all of the ongoing development, we’ve recently integrated Rdio’s engineering team to help us build out an on-demand product. They’ve brought in a ton of new ideas and are asking all of the right questions. Together we are learning a lot about how to scale both our tech and our team.
Given all of this, we’ve decided that it would be great to start compiling and sharing what we are learning with the rest of the community. And it’s only fitting that the title of this blog — Algorithm and Blues — comes from the retired Rdio engineering blog.
